Automatic or Manual Ignition: Which is Best for My Gas Fire Pit?

One of the most common questions we receive from our customers each week is whether a Direct Spark Ignition (Automatic) or Battery Sparker Ignition (Manual) is better for their gas fire pit table.

The answer is...It depends!

Both options are perfectly safe as all Outdoor GreatRoom fire pit tables are UL listed, and offer simple installation and operation, but factors like the fire pit table's location, anticipated usage, and available budget need to be considered when making the determination. Before diving into too much detail on which one to pick, let's look at an overview of each ignition type.

Automatic: Direct Spark Ignition System

The automatic Direct Spark Ignition (DSI) system operates on a simple on/off switch. When switched to the "On" position, the module beeps once to signal it is running diagnosis. Next, the ignition starts sparking and the automatic valve opens. Within 12 seconds, the flame will light. Once the flame sensor recognizes the flame, the sparking will stop and a second beep will signal that the system is working properly.

The DSI system has also has notable safety features. For example, if the flame blows out due to wind, the system will try to reignite the flame. If the burner is unable to reignite after 12 seconds, the system will automatically enter safety shut-down mode and close the gas supply to the burner. This shut-down mode keeps excess gas from entering the environment.

Manual: Battery Sparker Ignition

The manual ignition system operates by utilizing an electronic battery-operated sparker. The fire pit table will ignite when the igniter button is pushed to create a spark. Then, while the igniter is still being pressed, a gas valve is slowly turned to the "on" position and then pushed in until a flame appears. Once the flame appears, the height can be adjusted for more or less warmth and ambiance.

Which option is best for me?

As we mentioned early on in the post, it really depends! The automatic DSI system is usually better suited for commercial use like at a restaurant, resort patio, apartment, etc. because the switch allows for easy use by anyone potentially using the fire pit table. The enhanced safety features are an added benefit as well. All that said, a DSI system may also find its home in a residential setting and be useful for individuals who want an easy on/off option.

Cost may be a factor when considering a DSI system as well. The upgrade from the standard battery sparker to the DSI system is $1,500. Almost all Outdoor GreatRoom Company gas fire pit tables have the option to be upgraded to a DSI system for either liquid propane and/or natural gas. To see if the fire pit table you like can be upgraded to DSI, check out the Products page!

Manual ignition is usually a better option for residential use. The ability to adjust the flame height and the lower cost are often the key factors at play.

When deciding which is best for your gas fire pit table, consider who will be using it, where it will be located, your budget, and your emphasis on enhanced safety features. If you're still unsure, consider visiting your local dealer to have them help you through the decision process!
