In last week's blog we addressed our customers and dealers in northern climates who may be putting their fire pits into hibernation for the winter and provided some tips and best practices to properly do that. This week, we're doing the inverse!
There are many customers and dealers in our southern markets who may be taking their fire pits out of hibernation and are looking to get them going once again and in this blog we'll outline some tips and best practices to make sure you get your fire pit up and running safely and smoothly!
Before Turning Your Fire Pit OnHere are some things you should double check and do before you go to light your fire pit.
- If you haven't used your fire pit for awhile, you'll want to check your burner orifice and make sure it's clear because sometimes spiders or insects can cacoon in there. You can use a paper clip or something similar to open/clear that orifice.
- Check all the gas fittings and to make sure they're secure. Use a leak test solution to ensure there are no leaks anywhere.
- Remove and clean your fire media. This helps to make sure they aren't carrying any dust or debris that could potentially plug the burner ports. Also double check, especially if you have glass media, that none of it is stuck in the wind guard. The image below shows where you should check for this media.
- With your fire media removed, you can also clean the stainless steel burner. Clear any of the ports of debris and then wipe down the rest of the burner to make it look like new!
- If your fire pit uses our Push Button (manual) Ignition, double check to make sure the battery in the sparker is good! Your fire pit won't light if the battery is dead. All sparkers need one AAA battery.
- If your fire pit runs on liquid propane, make sure the tank is full! It's always a good idea to get fresh a propane tank hooked up when bringing your fire pit out hibernation. It'll allow the fire to burn longer and won't cause any confusion (sometimes we get service calls saying the burner stopped working, when in fact a nearly empty propane tank just ran out of gas).
- If you have a concrete or wood fire pit, this is a great time to re-seal their surfaces if they have chips or scratches. The two videos below can help you through that process!

Once your fire pit is cleaned, you've checked for leaks, and ensured there's no debris in the burner ports or wind guard, you're ready to turn it on!
